- GBH (s.18 and s.20)
This means inflicting ‘really serious harm’. It ranges in seriousness from a broken nose to putting someone in a coma. For section 18 GBH the maximum punishment is life imprisonment. Typical sentences for GBH offences range from high level community orders to up to around 5 years in prison. - ABH (s.47)
This means actual bodily harm. It is assaulting someone and inflicting a low to medium level injury such as bruising or a cut. The maximum sentence is 5 years. Typical sentences range from a community order to 2 years in prison. - Common assault (s.39)
This means assaulting someone but not necessarily causing any injury. It is usually a slap or a punch with no injury. The maximum sentence is 6 months imprisonment. Typical sentences range from a fine to a community order where the person has no previous convictions.
