Case study
In July 2024, a tragic collision on a slip road off the A316 near Sunbury Cross resulted in the deaths of two young men riding a high-powered electric bike. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning and involved a vehicle that failed to stop at the scene. What followed was a complex and high-profile investigation that led to multiple arrests and murder charges.
Our client was one of four individuals charged in connection with the incident. From the outset, our defence team — comprising expert barristers and solicitors — took a proactive and meticulous approach to the case. We worked closely with the client and their family, ensuring they were fully informed and involved in every strategic decision. This collaborative approach was central to building a successful defence.
The prosecution alleged that the defendants had pursued the victims at high speed, ultimately causing the fatal collision. The narrative presented was one of coordinated action and intent. However, our team immediately identified significant gaps in the evidential chain and inconsistencies in the timeline of events.
We commissioned independent forensic analysis, challenged assumptions made in the police investigation, and scrutinised mobile phone data, CCTV footage, and witness testimony. Our barristers cross-examined key witnesses with precision, exposing contradictions and highlighting the absence of direct evidence linking our client to the alleged pursuit or collision.
Throughout the four-week trial at Guildford Crown Court, our defence remained focused on the principle of individual culpability. We made it clear that guilt by association could not be sustained without clear, admissible evidence. The jury was reminded that each defendant must be judged on their own actions, not the actions of others.
The outcome was decisive: our client was the only defendant acquitted of all charges. The jury returned a unanimous not guilty verdict, recognising that the prosecution had failed to establish our client’s involvement beyond a reasonable doubt.
