Case study summary

Our client was a carer for her brother and it was alleged by another family member that she had been taking large sums of money from his account. She came to our specialist lawyers to get the case dropped.

Case study

An elderly woman who cared for her brother, our client was shocked when the police asked her to attend a voluntary interview after another family member made an allegation of fraud. She had no previous experience with the criminal legal system and turned to our expert fraud lawyers for help.

It was alleged that our client had taken approximately £7,500 from her brother and had done this by abusing her position as his carer. She explained to us that this was in fact not the case and she had only acted as he had told her to. She had taken the money from his account, but only to use it to set up a funeral plan for him. We attended the police interview with her and drafted a detailed prepared statement setting out her account in a controlled and clear way. We also encouraged the police to reach out to our client's brother to get his side of the story.

We advanced the statement during her interview and, following the interview, the police were left with no choice but to drop the case. They had spoken with our client's brother and he had confirmed that what she said was true.

Our client was able to move on with her life without the fear of a criminal prosecution.
