Case study summary

Our client was accused of assaulting, controlling and stealing from her ex-partner following an emotional break-up. We challenged each allegation and provided evidence proving all of them to be false. The police dropped their investigation 10 days after we stepped in to help.

Case study

Our client lived on the Isle of Wight and contacted us after she was interviewed for four separate allegations. After recently ending the relationship with her ex-partner, she found herself accused of sexual assault, assault by beating, theft and controlling and coercive behaviour. Having spent so long caring for her partner, she was both shocked and devastated.

Knowing that she could prove her innocence but needing the help of experienced lawyers to do so, she called us right away. In the first call, we obtained a significant amount of detail and discovered that our client was at risk of losing her job within the NHS as a result of these allegations. We could already see that representations to the police would be vital in this case.

The day after we were instructed, we met with our client to understand more about the allegations and the events leading up to them. We discussed how she had been subjected to stalking and harassment in a previously relationship and to be accused of similar offences herself was very traumatic.

We worked closely with our client to gather recent text messages sent by her ex-partner which showed not only that they did not support the investigation, but that they were in fact the one who was controlling our client. This was clear from the frequent blackmail attempts made by her ex-partner, who said that he would drop the charges if she paid him what he was asking.

With the messages becoming increasingly distressing, we called the officer in the case. After carefully relaying the evidence and our understanding of the case, the officer agreed that this investigation needed to be reviewed. They spoke with their sergeant following our call and the case was dropped that same afternoon. This was only 10 days after we first spoke with our client.

In such a short space of time we were able to ensure our client could not only return to work but preserve her good name. She is now working to recover from the emotional impact and is grateful that we provided resources to assist with this.
