Our client was a recently retired family man. He was shocked when an old friend made historical rape allegations against him.

The client was very concerned when the police asked him to attend an interview. He had never been in this situation before and was very worried about what might happen. He contacted our specialist criminal lawyers, who represented him during the interview.

The complaint had been made by a former family friend. She had accused the client of spiking her drink and then raping her as she went in and out of consciousness. She also alleged that the client had tricked her into believing they were married when they were not. She argued that she consented to have sex with him on the basis that they were married and that her consent was negated when she found out the truth. This was all said to have happened five years ago.

Our client wholly denied the allegations; these had been entirely fabricated. Our specialist criminal lawyers analysed the situation and accessed the evidence. It was clear that the complainant’s account lacked credibility and, in the absence of supporting evidence, there was not sufficient evidence for him to be charged. In this case, the correct tactical decision was to make no comment during the interview.

The allegations were swiftly dropped by the police shortly after the interview. The client is now spending time with his family and has moved past this stressful period in his life.
